Our friends suggested that we go away for a few days for her birthday. Six pairs. A few years ago we all went to Berlin together and had an incredible time. This weekend was just as fun. Take care of yourself, do these things more often.

We went to the Mayflower Inn. Fred and I went there to recharge our batteries when our kids were little. There have been a few upgrades since then and the spa is beautiful. It felt more magical then, but maybe it was my mindset.

The weather didn’t cooperate for a hike, so we drove into the cities and did a bit of shopping, ate a bit, and wandered around. No masks when vaccinated. We all giggled and obviously bought! Blueprint is an insanely well-curated kitchen store – incredible hearty produce, linen napkins, pots and pans, and so much more. The owner carries socially conscious products and supports local women. This was a mother and son shop.

The mother told us to check out her son’s new store, Louis CT. And that’s what we did. The gift of curating is deep in our genes. You can go in there, take some vintage furniture and artwork, and maybe relax your couch. We loved the place.

This waterfall is behind the shops in New Preston. Blink your eyes and you will miss the city.

Off to lunch at the White Horse, a country pub. The size of each serving was insane! This pot cake is for you.

A little rest and relaxation before heading to the CT for dinner. This is obviously the place. A nice warm glow hits you as soon as you enter the door. We could easily have been in the middle of a European farming town. Modern with a good look. We even met people we know there! The best part is that I knew the owner. I didn’t realize when we walked in. The pea hummus and crackers were superb!

Joann Makovitzky is the managing partner of Community Table. She worked in the restaurant business forever with her ex-husband. Divorced, moved to New Preston, started a new life, bought a house, and boom, there she is. I even got the chance to stop by her house the next day to pick up a lost item. Her home is charming, with incredible backyard views and an open kitchen. It’s great to see her and even more beautiful what she has achieved.

The next day we moved out, went home and vowed to limit our food and alcohol consumption for at least a few days. One of my favorite pastimes was sitting by the fire, sipping amaro and making s’mores. I’m looking forward to more of them this summer!
